Mullican Flooring Requests Contributions to NWFA Named Scholarship Fund in Memory of Industry Veteran Don Conner

Donations will help fund scholarship programs
for future generations of wood flooring professionals

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn., Aug. 28, 2023 — In memory of James Donald “Don” Conner, Jr., a beloved hardwood flooring industry legend who passed away in October 2022, Mullican Flooring is encouraging individuals to contribute to a National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) Education and Research Foundation (ERF) Named Scholarship Fund in his name.

Conner, a 44-year veteran of the wood flooring industry, retired in 2013. He was introduced to the industry at the age of 8, when he began working with his father in the family business, Conner Tile & Floor Covering Company, in his native Oklahoma. He served in the U.S. Air Force, which included a tour in Vietnam, and received numerous decorations and citations for his service. After his military career, he attended college and rejoined his father’s business before co-founding his own floor covering company.

After working as vice president of research and development for Harris Tarkett, Conner joined Mullican Flooring as director of product and research, where he also served as director of training and national sales representative.

Conner was heavily involved with the NWFA, where he helped develop technical manuals and guidelines, and served as an instructor at the NWFA/NOFMA/MFMA schools and on the board of directors. He also established the NWFA Certified Professionals (NWFACP) program and earned several NWFA degrees, including Craftsman, Master Craftsman, Advanced Master Craftsman, Vanguard and Ambassador.

Conner retired from his role as NWFA technical director in 2013, one year after receiving the prestigious Industry Leadership Award at the NWFA Wood Flooring Expo, something only 10 other individuals had achieved before him. In addition, he was given honorary lifetime membership and certification upon his retirement.

“Don was extremely passionate about hardwood flooring and teaching other people in the industry,” said Neil Poland, president of Mullican Flooring. “He was a great mentor who taught many people how to install, sell and quote hardwood flooring products. He was the backbone of the NWFA. He received many awards and honors throughout his career for his contributions to our industry and the education of many wood flooring professionals who continue to work in the industry today.”

Donations to the NWFA Education and Research Foundation in Conner’s honor will be used to fund scholarship programs for future generations of wood flooring professionals. A total contribution of $20,000 will meet the eligibility requirements for the NWFA’s Named Scholarship, which permanently honors an individual who made significant and lasting contributions to the industry. Donations honoring Conner are currently slightly past the halfway point for the Named Scholarship and may be sent to the National Wood Flooring Association, 111 Chesterfield Industrial Blvd., Chesterfield, Missouri, 63005, or submitted online.

“Don genuinely cared for people and was one of the kindest, most knowledgeable members of our industry,” Poland added. “I’m proud to have had him as a lifelong friend. His family was very important to him, and he loved to talk about his grandchildren and how his wife, Melissa, kept him out of trouble. I will always remember him as a great husband, father, grandfather and friend.”

The NWFA offers hands-on and online learning for wood flooring professionals. Visit https://nwfa.org/education/ for more information about the training program. The NWFA Education & Research Center Scholarship program provides financial assistance for NWFA training events.

Why Real Hardwood?

There have never been more options to choose from to adorn homes with exotic or high-tech flooring when building or remodeling.  The number of materials, composites, patterns, and installations available at widely diverging price points can make it overwhelming to select the best flooring for your space.

However, there is one flooring choice that has been desired above all others for over a century.  Real hardwood flooring is set apart from all the rest by its look, feel, durability, health benefits, environmental friendliness, versatility, and return on investment.

Look

There’s no denying the overarching visual appeal associated with hardwood flooring.  Just consider how many other products throughout the years have attempted to replicate the beauty and warmth of real hardwood flooring.  No matter the budget, space, or other considerations that a person has in selecting their flooring material, it’s obvious that people prefer the look of hardwood.

It is impossible to perfectly duplicate all the character and comfort that real hardwood flooring provides.  The rich tones that the natural wood fibers provide can’t be replicated—even high-resolution photographic reproductions can’t recreate the texture and depth of the real thing.  From warm tones, deep natural fluctuations in color, and varying grain patterns that provide interest to a room’s décor, hardwood floors are the foundation for an inviting and attractive space.

Read more to explore which hardwood flooring style fits your aesthetic.

Feel

There is nothing that beats the feeling of hardwood floors.  Even the best wood floor imitators can’t capture the warm, yet solid feel of hardwood floors.  As soon as you set foot on a manmade product masquerading as hardwood flooring, you know the difference.

It starts with the sound.  Manmade wood-flooring replicas often sound dead, with a hollow “thud” that can’t replace the sound of walking across real hardwood flooring.  There’s a reason that guitars, pianos, violins, and other handcrafted musical instruments are still made from wood – it’s a musical material!

Walking across a hardwood floor in bare feet is also more pleasant than walking across other hard surface flooring materials such as tile or stone, which can often feel uncomfortable or cold to unpadded feet.  Consider that, for years, the kitchen has been thought to be a “no go” for hardwood flooring due to concerns with water and durability.  However, a growing number of builders and homeowners are now placing hardwood flooring in the kitchen.  Why? Because it is the most heavily trafficked room in the house, and people love the feel of standing on hardwood.

With newer constructions and finishes, hardwood flooring is a perfect choice for the kitchen—and will add the welcoming feel that homeowners want for the most social room in the modern house.

Learn more about which hardwood flooring construction is right for you.

Durability

Durability is a huge consideration when shopping for the right flooring material.  After all, flooring gets more abuse than any other part of a space.  It’s also the area where many other materials claim to be superior to hardwood flooring.

Is hardwood flooring less durable than other look-alike alternatives?  Hardwood flooring is a resilient material that benefits from the natural characteristics of wood.  Tile, carpet, and vinyl usually need to be replaced every 10 years or so to deal with the wear that has accumulated, whether that be from cracks caused by dropping heavy objects, stains that won’t come out, or scrapes and scratches in a material that can’t be refinished.

Hardwood floors benefit from durable finishes and a natural material that can be sanded and refinished to refresh the look of your space.  Small dents can even be repaired by applying steam to the affect spot, allowing the wood fibers to expand back to their original shape.  These characteristics allow hardwood floors to last for the life of your home – and you’ll want them to!  Unlike shag carpet, red linoleum, and other trendy floorings, hardwood floors offer timeless value and style.

Read more about hardwood care and maintenance.

Good for Your Health and the Environment

Hardwood flooring is desirable because of its health benefits: it’s easy to clean, it doesn’t trap dust and other allergens, and it is a natural material that will not release toxic fumes into your home.  Some uncertified imitation hardwood floors use artificial chemical compounds that can introduce unwelcome fumes into your home through a process called off-gassing.  As the artificial products break down, they can release noxious fumes that are not good for you or your family’s health.

Hardwood floors are made of natural, organic materials that trap carbon and will biodegrade at the end of their extensive lifespan.  Unlike other flooring that needs to be replaced every few years, hardwood flooring will not end up sitting forever in a landfill.  All our lumber is sustainably harvested in the Appalachian Mountains, and we work with local and national organizations to ensure that our forests are protected for future generations.

Read more about Mullican’s commitment to your health and safety.

Versatility

Hardwood flooring comes in different species, colors, widths, finishes, and installation styles, providing you with the perfect hardwood flooring to fit your space and décor.  Unlike other flooring materials, hardwood flooring can be refinished to update the style of a room, up to 10 times depending on the flooring and refinishing process.  Hardwood flooring is completely unique as a flooring option in this way—as other materials are not designed for refinishing, just a little sanding and refinishing and you can have a completely new look for your space.

Read more about the different hardwood species.

Return on Investment

No other existing flooring has a better return on investment than hardwood flooring.  Home buyers are willing to pay more for a house with hardwood floors and covet hardwood more than any other flooring.  Even for those looking to renovate and update older homes, it is always a wonderful surprise to find original hardwood hiding beneath dingy carpets.

If you, like the majority of modern homebuyers, are likely to be selling your home within ten to twenty years, installing real hardwood flooring invests directly in that sale—with the added benefit that you get to enjoy the beauty and durability of hardwood floors while you live there.  You can’t go wrong with hardwood flooring, and potential buyers will increase their estimation of the quality of your home when they see hardwood floors.

If you want more information about the quality, options, and benefits of real hardwood flooring please contact Mullican Flooring or any of our retail partners.  Mullican Flooring is a leading manufacturer of hardwood flooring, and we source all our lumber within the United States of America using industry-leading sustainability practices.  We are confident that we can help you find the right hardwood flooring to match your décor and budget that will give you a lifetime of beauty and style within your home.

Winter and Hardwood Flooring

Oh the weather outside is frightful, but the hardwood flooring inside is delightful.  What do you need to know to keep your hardwood floors safe and cozy this winter?

Colder temperatures bring on various joys like snow, fireside cocoas, and the holiday season.  They can also affect your hardwood floors.

Dry Air

Cooler temperatures generally mean drier conditions.  In some areas, winter brings about moderate moisture conditions that are perfect for hardwood floors.  In those locales, winter can actually be one of the best times to install hardwood flooring, as the flooring should easily acclimate to the new space.

In other areas, winter means very dry air.  Just as too much moisture can cause hardwood flooring to expand in unsightly ways, too little moisture can cause hardwood flooring to contract beyond normal limits, leaving gaps and sometimes even cracks in the wood.

What can you do to keep hardwood flooring at the right humidity level?  In very dry areas, you might consider purchasing a humidifier to bring the ambient moisture into the normal range for hardwood flooring.  Be careful though—don’t over-humidify the flooring, or you’ll start to have problems related to high moisture.  Remember that hardwood is happiest between 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit and 35% to 55% relative humidity.

Salt, Slush, and Snowy Paws

Perhaps you, your children, or your pets have been bounding out in the snow all day before returning home.  It is very likely that, on entry, your clothes or shoes are dripping with cold water, packed with snow, or coated with road salt and grime.

To minimize the amount of moisture and grit that reaches your floors, place mats at each entrance.  Don’t let water pool onto the floor or seep through a porous rug, as it can damage the flooring.  Clean up any slushy residue or grime immediately, and place any wet items in a place where they cannot drip onto the hardwood floor.

If your pet returns from the yard with wet paws or little balls of snow in their fur, have a warm towel ready to wipe them down, melt any snow, and clean them off before they track water throughout the house.

Ask guests and family members to remove their shoes at the door and place them in an area where dirt and water won’t transfer from the shoes to your hardwood floors.

With these tips and tricks, enjoy the coziness of the winter months with family and friends on your beautiful, warm hardwood floors.

Your personal style may line up more with some finishes, stains, and wood species than others.  Here are some of the more popular hardwood floor aesthetics to inspire you:

Wirebrushed Floors

Wirebrushed Floors are treated in a way that brings out the depth and natural beauty of the wood grain.  Their deeper textures make them a good fit for rustic or farmhouse styles as well as more modern, relaxed looks.  Exceptionally durable, these floors add an inviting feel to any space.

You can find wirebrushed floors at Mullican in a variety of tones and plank widths.  Shop our wirebrushed floors.

Gray Blends

Gray Blend Floors provide a beautiful, neutral base for home décor.  Gray tones have a calm, tranquil feel, and they can hue cooler or warmer depending on the stain.  Gray tones can provide a neutral background for bright colors to shine in your space, or they can set the backdrop for a serene retreat.

You can find a variety of floors with gray tones at Mullican.  Shop our gray blends.

Natural Finishes

Natural Finishes are a time-tested look that will never go out of style.  They show off the unique and organic beauty of each species and bring the warmth of natural wood into your home.  Natural finishes can complement both modern and traditional designs and are welcoming in both urban and rural settings.

You can find natural finishes in several different wood species, each with its own characteristics.  Shop our natural finishes.

Dark Tones

Dark Tones anchor your space with a bold foundation.  They can provide contrast to minimalist design with lighter furniture or serve as the backdrop to a maximalist aesthetic.  Dark flooring brings depth to your home and stands out against white molding and trim.

The Value of a Warranty

While your hardwood flooring construction and installation options may be limited by the physical structure of your space, Mullican Flooring provides a wide variety of styles to fit your tastes and preferences.  We can assure you that you will find a timeless and beautiful product that will meet or exceed your expectations for long-lasting wear.

Our products feature warranties from a 25-year finish warranty to a lifetime finish warranty.  Mullican Flooring warrants that the finish will not wear through to the wood within the amount of time specified in the Finish Warranty Chart or as long as the original purchaser owns the floor, whichever is less.

All our finished products are protected with an aluminum oxide finish, 10 times stronger than traditional urethane finishes.  We test our finishes to make sure they are of the highest quality—each of our products undergoes an abrasion test to ensure that the finish has good scratch resistance and will, with proper care and maintenance, retain its original integrity for the life of the warranty.

Here is what you need to know about what our warranties do and do not cover before selecting your hardwood flooring:

1. Natural Wood Characteristics

Mullican Flooring warrants that the products have been manufactured in compliance with the grading rules of Mullican Flooring and will be free from manufacturing defects.  Manufacturing defects do not include natural wood characteristics such as mineral streaks, knots, grain variations, normal minor differences between color of samples and the color of installed floors, color variations from board to board, or minor width variation.

When installing your floors, we recommend pulling boards from several different cases to get a good mix of colors and natural wood features.

2. Natural Expansion/Contraction and Moisture-Related Issues

Too much moisture causes hardwood floors to expand, and too little causes hardwood floors to contract.  While hardwood flooring will naturally expand and contract as the seasons change, moisture extremes can lead to undesirable changes to the floor, such as cupping, buckling, gapping, or cracking.  After your floor is installed, it is critical to maintain a normal temperature between 60-80 degrees Fahrenheit and a relative humidity between 35-55 percent.

Mullican’s warranties do not cover damage or unsatisfactory performance caused by excessive moisture, including, but not limited to, improper humidity inside the home, excessive ground moisture that migrates into the home for any reason, excessive sub-floor moisture, water leaks caused by broken pipes or appliances, improper cleaning methods such as wet mopping or the use of automated cleaning machines, and weather conditions or natural disasters such as flooding or excessive rainfall.

Mullican’s warranties do not cover damage or unsatisfactory performance caused by insufficient moisture, including, but not limited to, improper humidity inside the home and excessive direct sun exposure.  Homeowners in excessively dry parts of the country may need to humidify their homes and keep doors and windows closed to maintain appropriate moisture conditions.

3. Exposure to Sunlight

Some wood species are light sensitive, meaning that the wood exposed to light changes color over time.  Depending on the species, it may take six months to a year for the flooring to reach its full, rich color.  For highly light sensitive species, we recommend that you move furniture around periodically within the first six months to let the floor color even out.

Mullican’s limited warranties do not cover color changes to any flooring which results from exposure to Ultraviolet light.  Normal exposure to light will cause changes in the shading of any wood floor, and this is not considered a defect.

4. Gloss Reduction and Finish

Normal surface wear may cause a reduction in the “glossiness” of hardwood flooring.  While this may be more noticeable with high-gloss flooring or flooring in darker stained colors, it is not considered a manufacturer’s defect.

To maintain the glossy finish on your floors, clean them regularly and avoid oil, soap, or wax-based wood floor cleaning products that can dull the finish.  Keep pets’ nails trimmed, and have guests remove shoes when they enter the home.

5. Improper Installation

It is critical that all installations are done in compliance with the procedures outlined in the Mullican Flooring installation instructions, which can be found in each carton of flooring and on our website.

No damage or defects caused by improper installation or failure to provide a suitable environment are covered by this warranty.  Failure to install your flooring in accordance with the instructions will void all warranties.  If, before installation, you discover any flooring that has obvious defects, please immediately contact the dealer from whom the flooring was purchased, and replacement flooring will be provided at no cost.

6. Improper Use of Flooring/Damages

Our warranties do not cover damage, indentations, scratches, or stains arising from negligence, accidents, abuse, excessive heat, abnormal wear, construction, spike heels, grit, sand or other abrasives, dents, insect infestation after the product has left our factory, or domestic animals.

Mullican Flooring warranties do not cover damage caused by use of the flooring for purposes other than those for which it was designed; damage caused by disasters such as fire, flood, wind, and lightning; damage during shipment; or any other abuse or misuse by the purchaser.

This post is meant to serve as an overview.  Please refer to the full warranty program information or to the individual product brochure for a complete warranty, as exclusions and limitations do apply.

Have a question about any of our warranties?  Contact us.

Cleaning Do’s and Don’ts

Are you a first-time owner of hardwood floors?  Are you unsure how to properly clean the floors that you already have?  This article will help you understand some of the key do’s and don’ts of cleaning hardwood floors.

Do

Do vacuum weekly with the beater brush turned off.  This will pick up any debris on the surface and in any crevices of your wood floors.  Over time, debris buildup can interfere with the natural expansion and contraction of wood floors in different seasons, and small rocks, grit, and sand can scuff the finish.

Do clean up any spills immediately with a dry cloth.  If a dry cloth doesn’t get everything up, a damp cloth can be used for stickier messes.  However, the area should be dried immediately.

Do use a Mullican-approved hardwood flooring cleaner on a monthly basis, such as Bona Hardwood Flooring Cleaner or Basic Coatings.  Be careful not to apply the cleaner too liberally, and be sure to follow all product directions.

Don’t

Don’t leave gravel and dirt on your floor that can cause scratches and dents.

Don’t pour water on the floor or use a wet mop, as these will damage the floor and finish over time.  When wood absorbs too much water, it can expand and warp in undesirable ways.  Steam mops especially can cause damage to your floors, lifting the finish and causing the wood to absorb more moisture than normal from the added heat.

Don’t use unapproved household cleaners, oil soaps, and waxes, which can damage or dull the finish on your floors.

Be wary of new cleaning trends that may cause damage to your floor!  If you have any questions about the appropriateness of a cleaning technique, see our full Cleaning and Maintenance guidelines or feel free to contact us.

The Pet Owner’s Guide to Hardwood Floors

Hardwood floors are a natural surface that you and your pets can enjoy for the lifetime of your home.  To get the most out of your hardwood floors, keep these things in mind:

Claws

Dogs, cats, and some other household pets can damage hardwood flooring with their claws.  Dogs often use their claws to gain traction when running around the house, so be sure to keep your dog’s nails trimmed.  Shorter nails mean a lesser likelihood of your pet leaving dents in the floor or finish.  For cats, have a dedicated scratching post (or several) to keep your cat from scratching at the floor.

When selecting your flooring, think about hardwood species with a higher Janka rating, as they won’t dent as easily.  Alternatively, choose a flooring with a distressed finish or prominent grain that will hide scratches.  Mullican offers a variety of floor options with durable finishes that are a good fit for you and your pets.

You can also place rugs and protective coverings on your floor in high traffic areas—perhaps there is a spot where your pooch claws at the floor for a minute to gain traction when rounding a corner, or maybe your cat likes to scatter food and water out around the bowls.

If the flooring starts to show natural wear and tear over time, it can be refinished and re-sanded to buff out any scratches, depending on the thickness of the wear layer.

Messes

Clean up any unexpected pet messes quickly to protect the finish and color of your hardwood flooring.  Wood is a natural material that can absorb moisture, including pet urine which can seep into the wood and leave an unsightly stain.  If your pet soils a rug, clean the rug and pull both the rug and the backing away from the floor until everything has fully dried.

One of the benefits of hardwood flooring is the ease of cleaning up pet hair, dander, and dirt.  Keep your floors clean by vacuuming regularly to prevent scratches from dirt and small rocks brought in by your pets from the outdoors.

Click here for more cleaning tips.

Pet Accessories

Perhaps you have a bird cage on wheels or a large crate for your pooch to sleep in.  Protect the floor underneath these items of furniture with felt padding, caster cups, or other appropriate materials.

Hardwood flooring is a healthy, safe material for you and your pets to live on and enjoy each other’s company for the life of your home.  With the right care and maintenance, hardwood is a great choice for you and your pets.

Solid Hardwood Floors

At Mullican Flooring, we are dedicated to creating the highest-quality hardwood flooring in the world.

Solid hardwood is the top flooring choice among designers, builders, and homeowners.  Natural hardwood floors are an affordable and versatile investment that enhance the beauty and long-term value of a property.

While both engineered and solid hardwood flooring are beautiful additions to any property, solid wood planks are appealing because of the thickness of their wear layer.  At ¾-inch thick, solid wood floors can be stripped, sanded, and refinished several times, and the wood planks will last much longer than the finish warranty.  Due to our durable finishes, re-sanding and refinishing are not a required part of hardwood maintenance, but solid wood floors provide homeowners with greater options for smoothing over every-day wear and tear and updating the look of the floor.

With engineered hardwood flooring, the number of times it can be sanded and refinished is dictated by the thickness of the wear layer.  Styles and tastes change over the years, and the look of solid wood flooring can be changed to reflect current trends, going from a light color to warmer, darker tones and, if desired, back again.

Solid hardwood flooring is an excellent choice for on-grade (ground level) or above-grade (upstairs) locations, but its greater variability under high moisture conditions makes it a poor choice for below-grade (basement) locations.  Solid hardwood flooring should be nailed down to a sturdy subfloor to prevent floor movement.  It cannot be installed on concrete, but it can be installed on 5/8” plywood (3/4” is preferable and recommended), oriented strand board (OSB), and wood plank subfloors.

Did you know that you can identify Red Oak and White Oak trees by their bark characteristics and leaves?  Red Oak trees tend to have smoother bark and pointed tips on the end of their leaves, while White Oak has deeper grooves in its bark and rounded tips at the end of its leaves.  The differences between the two kinds of Oak don’t stop there—they can affect the appearance of your hardwood floors.

The primary differences between Red Oak hardwood flooring and White Oak hardwood flooring can be found within the color, graining, and water resistance of the species.

Red Oak has a subtle, pink-like tint that is lighter than White Oak and that develops into warmer red tones with a natural finish.  White Oak tends to have a darker, yellow-like to gray tint that can be complemented with a variety of stains.  As they each begin as two different colors, Red Oak and White Oak absorb stains differently.  With lighter stains, it is easier to see the difference between the red undertones of Red Oak and the yellow undertones of White Oak.  Darker stains decrease the difference between the two colors.

With regard to graining, Red Oak has more prominent grain patterns than White Oak hardwood, but White Oak has more mineral streaks and a smoother look.  The tighter grain pattern of White Oak makes it slightly more water resistant than Red Oak.

Crafted from the highest-quality and selection of Oak hardwoods, Mullican offers a variety of prefinished solid, prefinished engineered, and unfinished Oak hardwood selections for a beautifully designed space.  From traditional, smooth finishes to contemporary, hand-crafted textures and wider planks, Mullican can provide the right Oak flooring for you.

Hardwood Floors: Investing in Your Home

When renovating your home, it’s important to consider the return on investment for any improvements you are contemplating.  Upgrading your flooring to hardwood is one of the best ways to increase the value of your home.  Flooring is one of the first things a prospective buyer sees and feels when walking through a prospective house, and it can make or break the impression of a home.

Among tile, carpet, and stone, wood flooring has the highest return on investment, boosting the sales price of your home as much as 2.5%.  In another study by USA Today, 54% of home buyers were willing to pay more for a home that features hardwood floors.  Home buyers consistently want hardwood floors for their durability, hypoallergenic nature, and unmatched beauty.

One of the main benefits of upgrading to hardwood is the durability and longevity of the flooring.  Other floor covering options such as carpet, wood-polymer composite, and laminate will need to be replaced about every ten years or so, but hardwood floors will last for the life of your home.  Many of our products feature lifetime finish warranties, and hardwood floors can be refinished to extend their lifespan far beyond that of the finish.  Solid wood products can be refinished several times, and some engineered floors can be refinished, depending on the thickness of the wear layer.

Hardwood floors are easy to clean, and they do not trap dust, pet hair, and other allergens.  Plus, they are made from natural, organic materials that are good for the health of your home.

Home buyers know that nothing beats the natural beauty of hardwood.  Every plank of hardwood flooring is unique, with its own grain patterns, knots, and other natural variations.  Mullican Flooring offers a wide variety of wood species, plank widths, finishes, stains, and textures to provide you with the perfect flooring for your space.

Invest in hardwood flooring to increase the value of your home, and enjoy its beauty, health benefits, and durability while you wait to sell.  Visit your local retailer of Mullican Flooring to find your new floors.
