In March 2011 I co-led a group of young people and youth workers on a learning journey to Harlem, New York. Students from 3 local schools – 2 maintained, 1 independent American – joined together to visit community projects in Harlem and Brooklyn. All the young people shared a commitment to the local community centre and all had been charged with the task of returning to London with lessons from the most inspiring projects in New York. We visited Harlem Children’s Zone, the Superhero Supply Store, The Girls’ Club and three other world-class projects. Powerful new friendships were formed between young people of profoundly different backgrounds.
One student wrote about her experience in the school newspaper.
